Charter Oak Awards $24,000 in Grants

During the 1st quarter of 2025, Charter Oak received multiple Grant requests. In March, the Grant Committee awarded $24,000 in grants.

The seven organizations that received an award were: Bungay Fire Brigade, Children in Placement, Connecticut Institution for the Blind, CT Foodshare, Operation Fuel, Inc., United Cerebral Palsy of Eastern CT and Cactus Jack Foundation.

Thank you to all the organizations for your hard work and dedication to our communities.

Fraud Seminar Recap:

We had over 50 people attend our Combating Exploitation and Fraud Seminar on Thursday, March 27th.

This seminar included a panel of speakers that consisted of:

  • Michael Hurley – Supervisory Inspector State’s Attorney Office New London, CT
  • Marissa Goldberg – Senior Assistant State’s Attorney New London, CT
  • Judy Britt – VP Compliance Credit Union League of CT
  • Christine Foster – SMP Volunteer Coordinator Senion Resources on Aging
  • Todd O’Connell – Detective Waterford Police Department

The panel was asked questions about types of scams that are presently taking place, red flags to be aware of, current laws, what to do if you have been scammed, and some ways to avoid becoming a victim. Below are the key takeaways we would like to share:

  • Never give out any personal information such as social security number or banking information, especially passwords.
  • Have a trusted family member or friend that you can talk to if you are concerned something may be a scam.
  • Be aware of emails and text messages coming from an unknown source.
  • Do not let anyone pressure you into making quick decisions.
  • Timely reporting a scam to the police is the best practice.
  • Anyone can become a victim. Take your time to protect yourself, do not rush into anything.

Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week

To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in May, Charter Oak would like to bring a basket of school supplies and goodies to a couple of deserving schools – but we need your help! We would like YOU to nominate your favorite teacher and share with us why you are grateful for them.

Click here for more information and to nominate your favorite teacher on Facebook by April 21st.
